Learn to be a Swim Instructor with the CRC!
Interested in being a CRC Swim Instructor this summer?
The CRC hires summer employees as pool attendants, lifeguards, and program instructors, either as paid employees or through our scholarship program. (Learn more about our Lifeguard Scholarship Program!) Our Water Safety Instructors will teach youth swim lessons throughout the summer, and do not need to be certified lifeguards, though CRC lifeguards are also encouraged to take the course. These opportunities are available to all ages, but is a great chance for teens and young adults to gain valuable work experience.
Swim Safely with the CRC
During this water safety course, participants will learn how to help individuals enjoy their time in the water safely. This course will prepare our swim instructors to teach Learn to Swim programs, but is also a great opportunity for pool patrons to learn more about keeping themselves and others safe in the water!
The course will focus on a number of key areas, such as:

- Water safety at public pools, homes, natural bodies of water and more, including the Circle of Drowning Prevention and Chain of Drowning Survival.
- Hydrodynamics, including why some things float, resistance to movement and creating movement in water, and swimming efficiency.
- Basic safety, survival and swimming skills to help children gain water competency.
- Helping people with disabilities and other health conditions enjoy the water safely.
- Aquatic fitness and training for people of any age.
Course Details
This course contains an online portion and an in pool portion.
PREREQUISITES:
Be at least 16 years of age on or before the final scheduled lesson of this course.
Demonstrate the ability to perfrom the following swimming skills:

Swim the following strokes consistent with the Stroke Performance Charts, Level 4
- Front Crawl - 25 yards
- Back Crawl - 25 yards
- Breaststroke - 25 yards
- Elementary backstroke - 25 yards
- Sidestroke - 25 yards
- Butterfly - 25 yards
- Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling).
- Tread water for 1 minute.
